With Anglian Water and Cambridge Water announcing With Anglian Water and Cambridge Water announcing Temporary Use Bans for domestic customers (or Hosepipe Bans as people excitedly use) we have received a number of requests about what Grounds people can and cannot do in regard to watering.

Recreational Cricket Grounds can water under a statutory exemption for "using a hosepipe to water a garden for health and safety reasons!" So that means by law we can water, but we need a little bit more context.

What does this mean for cricket?
- The need for water to maintain a safe playing surface is established in cricket.
- Clubs in areas under Temporary Use Bans will be able to water pitches in preparation or in use, on the grounds of safety.
- The watering of used pitches and other parts of the square is only permitted where there is a risk to health and safety, for example:
The square is cracking, and is affecting the safety of players or you are planning to reuse a used pitch in the immediate future.
- Used ends need to be repaired only to provide safe surface levels to minimise injury to players from ball strike when fielding.
- Outfield should not be generally by watered. Most clubs in Cambridgeshire would accept they do not have the capability/resources to irrigate outfields. Outfields will go brown but should respond to rainfall once the dry weather or drought has passed and recover.
- Water companies may impose peak hour restrictions on this exemption (e.g., no watering 0800-1000 and 1700-2100) – it is a Clubs responsibility to check on this with their water company. ECB Pitch Advisor for Cambs, Wayne Hardy, has already given Cambs Grounds Assoc members advice on the most useful times to water.
- All cricket clubs should be using water effectively and efficiently – the Grounds Management Association have a great article on their website called "Effective and Efficient Watering in Hot, Dry Weather" pop over and have a read.
- Lastly please note you do not need to seek the permission of your water company to apply water.

Please contact Neil Liversedge (neil.liversedge@cambscricket.org.uk) if you have any questions or if your Grounds Team wishes to join the Cambs Grounds Association
Women’s soft ball to hard ball transition sessions Women’s soft ball to hard ball transition sessions 🌟

Last week we ran two women’s soft ball to hard ball transition sessions at @city_of_ely_cricket_club and @thriplowcc . The sessions are designed to create a safe and welcoming space for women to try hard ball cricket for the first time, having grown a love of the game playing soft ball 🏏

During the session we:
🎾 discussed and practiced with all types of cricket ball, including soft, indoor, incredi and hard balls
🏏 tried on hard ball equipment, and had a go at running in it too!
🥅 had a practice of batting and bowling in the nets - with a mix of skills drills and ‘bat vs ball’
🤩 had lots of fun chatting about all things cricket!

We had a total of 17 women attend across the two sessions, coming from @ickletoncc @chatteriscricketclub @ThriplowCC Northstowe and @city_of_ely_cricket_club 🙌

This is the first step for players and clubs in starting a hard ball cricket team - if any clubs or players and interested in finding out more about hard ball cricket or running a transition session, please get in touch with Lara, our W&Gs Participation Officer ⬇️

It’s getting hot out there! ☀️☀️☀️ With another It’s getting hot out there! ☀️☀️☀️

With another heatwave upon us and the cricket season in full swing, it’s important to prioritise player, volunteer and spectator welfare ⬇️

🌡️ High temperatures can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, especially for bowlers, batters spending long periods at the crease, young children, older adults and those with existing health conditions.

Before training sessions and matches, remember to:
💧 Stay hydrated and make water readily available.
🧢 Wear hats, sunscreen and reapply regularly.
🌳 Use shade whenever possible.
⏱️ Consider avoiding the hottest part of the day where you can.
🥤 Take longer and more frequent drinks breaks.
👀 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headaches, nausea, cramp and excessive sweating.

Every ground is different, so consider your local conditions as well as the weather forecast when making decisions.

📲 Please share this with your teammates, coaches, volunteers and club members to help keep everyone safe in the heat. Download the full ECB extreme weather advice via links in our bio

Let’s enjoy more fantastic cricket, but make sure everyone is safe & comfortable too 💙
