Women’s League Cup Finals Day and Final League Tables

Women’s T20 Cup

On Sunday 7th September, we held our 1st ever Women’s T20 Cup Finals Day, at Burwell & Exning CC’s ground in Burwell. Four teams entered the competition, so we had both semi-finals and final back-to-back, with 3 female match officials present.

Semi-Final 1: Thriplow 2nd XI v City of Cambridge 2nd XI

City of Cambridge batted first, putting on 103-7 in the first innings. Kaylee Williamson top scored with 21, despite Thriplow’s tight bowling and Laura Graham taking 2 wickets.

An early flurry of wickets, meant that Thriplow’s middle order batters had to step up and captain Georgie Abensour did just that, top scoring with 20 runs. Ehsann Jethwa took 2 wickets for 8 runs off her 2 overs, helping City of Cambridge hinder Thriplow’s advances. Thriplow finished their innings 12 runs short of the target.

Semi-Final 2: Chippenham v March Town Marvels

Chippenham won the toss and elected to field. March Town’s opening bat, Emma Alterton, got them off to a flying start scoring 37 of 28 balls, before being dismissed LBW by Jackie Swift. Catherine Goakes carried her bat throughout the innings, ending on 20 not out, and helping the team to a huge 156 run target.

Chippenham’s top order struggled, until Holly Bosley came to the crease – playing some beautiful shots through the covers, she finished with 36 not out. Despite Holly’s efforts, March Town’s target was too much for Chippenham, and they fell 68 runs short.

Final: City of Cambridge 2nd XI v March Town Marvels

March Town won the toss and elected to bat. City of Cambridge’s Sanjana Goud (2 for 22 off 4) took a wicket with the very first ball of the innings, dismissing one of March Town’s most threatening batters, Emma Alterton. Lois Hopkins and Layla Gull, stepped up scoring 17 and 13 respectively. Nina Taank bowled overs 17 and 19, putting the pressure on March Town, bowling two overs for just 3 runs! March Town posted a score of 101 for 6.

The City of Cambridge batters started well, Natasha Cousins was going at a strike rate of 111 before being dismissed by a direct hit run out from Erin Brook. The other opener, Megan Lodwig, was also run out and this started a quick succession of wickets. Kaylee Williamson stepped up again scoring 42 runs off 21 balls, before being dismissed LBW in the 12th over, and City of Cambridge still needing 20 runs to take the win. Nina and Sanjana stayed in the middle, knowing that if they didn’t get out, that their team stood every chance of winning – sure enough, with 3.5 overs to go, City of Cambridge surpassed March Town’s target. Pick of March Town’s bowlers were Erin Brook and Lois Hopkins, who both had great economies.

The game was very exciting and both teams gave it their all. Congratulations to the T20 Cup champions City of Cambridge and thank you to Burwell & Exning CC for hosting us

There have been some incredibly close matches and it is great to see so many women accessing cricket at a level suitable to them.
